It was a significant point of controversy and debate during the carrier’s certification proceeding prior to operations commencing in 2007. US Federal law requires air carriers to be US citizens. To qualify, the outstanding voting interests of the air carrier must be at least 75% owned and effectively controlled by US citizens.

Despite record fuel costs and a challenging economic climate, the new airline reported consistent and steadily growing unit revenue and load factors since its launch in Aug-07, with record growth in the latter part of 2008.

Mr. Dana cited personal reasons for his decision, particularly the challenges of the transcontinental weekly commute from the New York area that he has conducted since the Company moved its corporate headquarters from Manhattan to Burlingame, California in 2005.

Virgin America announced it has changed some of the airline’s fees, effective 06-Jun-08. Due to the unprecedented surge in oil prices, Virgin America is increasing some of its fees for services such as pet and unaccompanied minor travel, overweight bags and flight changes. According to Virgin America, even with a brand new fleet that is 30% more fuel efficient than the average domestic airline fleet, the airline’s fuel bill can average hundreds of dollars per passenger on a transcontinental roundtrip at current oil prices.

Virgin America announced an expanded Summer flying schedule for 2008. With additional frequencies starting as soon as 11-May-08, Virgin America will add flights between Washington Dulles (IAD) and Los Angeles International (LAX), IAD and San Francisco International (SFO), New York Kennedy International (JFK) and LAX, JFK and SFO, and SFO and Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA) airports. These schedule additions will be in effect through 06-Jan-09.

Virgin America announced it has updated its checked baggage policy to allow passengers to check one bag for free, and a second bag for a USD25 fee. The new checked bag policy applies to travel to all of Virgin America’s destinations and becomes effective for travel commencing on 05-May-08. The airline’s previous second bag fee was USD10. Virgin America’s First Class guests are not charged for second bags and the airline’s carry-on baggage policy has not changed.
